World Press Freedom Day 2010

Food for Thought

-"Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, enshrined in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But around the world, there are Governments and those wielding power who find many ways to obstruct it. All Governments have a duty to protect those who work in the media." Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Message for World Press Freedom Day 2010

-The theme for this year's World Press Freedom Day is Freedom of Information. Trinidad and Tobago has an FIOA but exactly how effective is it? Does the public have the freedom to obtain any form of information from the government?

-As of 2009 Trinidad and Tobago was ranked 28th on the Press Freedom Index.

-For the year 9 journalist were killed, and 168 imprisoned worldwide.

-Have you ever heard of Eritrea? Ranked last on the press freedom index this country has very little press freedom. It is ranked the fourth worst jailer of journalist behind China and Iran.

- "Online journalism has changed the media landscape and the way we communicate with each other," said CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon. "But the power and influence of this new generation of online journalists has captured the attention of repressive governments around the world, and they have accelerated their counterattack."
